Swapping a light switch may seem minor, but a small wiring mistake can cause a hot wall plate, a tripping breaker, or in the worst cases a switch box that arcs and burns. That’s why every switch upgrade in your home should go through a licensed electrician who can verify the box, the wiring, and the load.
Common light switch projects we install across St. Louis homes:
Every installation is tailored to your home’s wiring and done in full compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC). Looking for other residential upgrades? Check out our Light Fixtures Installation and Outlet Installation services.

Excellent job!!Posted on Google Mary WeinmanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Beyond impressed and satisfied with Kay Bee Electric! They were kind, efficient, quick, knowledgeable, trustworthy and did a fantastic job. Corrected the issue without trying to sell us on much more costly work another company had insisted we “had to have” at the cost of thousands of dollars and Kay Bee fixed the issue to code for under $300. HIGHLY recommend!Posted on Google Rebecca CaldwellTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have used Kay Bee three different times and all have been great! We have had a variety of jobs done; total replacement of electrical panel to upgrade it, moved an electrical outlet to higher in the wall for tv, replaced four lights with wafer lighting, and updated all electrical boxes on our main floor). They take care of you in a couple of days and offer a good price. They brought all materials needed, and when I added more tasks, Scott called the main office and had the supplies delivered that day so he could complete the job. You can trust them to take care of you without killing the bank account. This last time, Scott came out and he did a super job. He has worked for the company for over 20 years, that says something about the company.

A standard single-pole switch on a circuit you can identify and shut off is the closest thing to a true DIY job in residential electrical. The risk usually isn't shock if the breaker is off. The risk is the part you can't see from outside the wall: a backstabbed wire that pulls loose six months later, a neutral that wasn't actually a neutral, or an undersized box that's now too full. One small mistake can cause a warm wall plate, a nuisance trip, or in the worst cases a fire inside the box.
A switch that buzzes, feels warm to the touch, or has a scorched or discolored faceplate is telling you the internal contacts are failing. Chatter or a spongy, hesitant flip is often a sign of worn contacts or a loose backstabbed connection behind the wallplate. Any flickering that follows the switch rather than the bulb, or a faint burning smell near the switch, means the wiring should be inspected before it's used again. We check the box, the wire connections, and the breaker load any time we're asked to replace a switch that's showing these signs.
Almost every Wi-Fi or hub-based smart switch needs a neutral conductor at the switch box. In a lot of older St. Louis homes that's the missing piece. The original switch loop was wired with hot and load only, no neutral, because a mechanical switch doesn't need one. Lutron Caseta is the workaround we recommend most often because the dimmer model can run without a neutral. For Decora Smart, Kasa, or anything that talks Wi-Fi natively, we'll pull a neutral if the box doesn't have one or recommend a Caseta swap instead.
