Relocating a switch or outlet is more complex than it looks. It usually means rerouting wiring through finished walls, opening neat access points in the drywall, and making sure the existing circuit can handle the new run. Our team handles all of it: quickly, cleanly, and in full compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC). Planning a bigger electrical upgrade? Common reasons homeowners ask us to relocate a switch or outlet:
When you hire our residential team, you’re getting code-compliant, fully insured, professionally executed work. We walk you through the process, provide clear pricing up front, and leave your home clean and safe. Learn more about outlet placement safety at Energy.gov and NFPA.org.

We make sure every relocation is done safely, up to code, and with minimal disruption to your walls or wiring. In most finished rooms we can fish the new run through the existing wall cavity, which means a single 4-by-4 inch access patch where the wire turns instead of a long open trench. The old box opening gets closed off properly per NEC 314.21 so there’s no hole left behind a baseboard or a piece of furniture.
Make your space more functional and safe with a professionally relocated switch or outlet. We’ll handle all the wiring, the rough patch on the access holes, and the code compliance. You just enjoy the improved layout. We rough-patch the drywall closed before we leave. Final finish-coat and paint match are handled by your painter or our preferred drywall sub, depending on which option you choose when we’re out for the job.

Excellent job!!Posted on Google Mary WeinmanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Beyond impressed and satisfied with Kay Bee Electric! They were kind, efficient, quick, knowledgeable, trustworthy and did a fantastic job. Corrected the issue without trying to sell us on much more costly work another company had insisted we “had to have” at the cost of thousands of dollars and Kay Bee fixed the issue to code for under $300. HIGHLY recommend!Posted on Google Rebecca CaldwellTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have used Kay Bee three different times and all have been great! We have had a variety of jobs done; total replacement of electrical panel to upgrade it, moved an electrical outlet to higher in the wall for tv, replaced four lights with wafer lighting, and updated all electrical boxes on our main floor). They take care of you in a couple of days and offer a good price. They brought all materials needed, and when I added more tasks, Scott called the main office and had the supplies delivered that day so he could complete the job. You can trust them to take care of you without killing the bank account. This last time, Scott came out and he did a super job. He has worked for the company for over 20 years, that says something about the company.
Planning a remodel or just need a switch on the right side of a new wall? Call (314) 837-3308 or book online to schedule outlet or switch relocation in the St. Louis area.
The cost varies based on how complicated the wiring is and how easy it is to access the walls. A short relocation in an open basement or unfinished garage is usually faster than the same job in a finished kitchen. We don't quote this over the phone or before the visit — jobs like this are priced once we're on site and can see the wiring and access involved. Call to schedule and we'll take care of the rest during the visit.
It's not a good idea to move a switch or an outlet yourself. The relocation usually means working with live wires (or wires you think are dead but aren't), cutting into finished walls, and making sure the old box is closed off properly so it isn't left hidden behind a baseboard or under new paint. It's best to hire a qualified electrician who can confirm the circuit is safe, the new location is up to code, and the patched wall is ready for your painter.
In most cases the disruption is minimal. We cut clean 4-by-4 inch access holes only where the wire has to turn inside the wall cavity, and we rough-patch them closed before we leave. The old switch or outlet opening is either blanked off with a proper cover plate or closed off inside the wall per NEC 314.21 so there's no exposed hole left behind. Final finish-coat and paint touch-up are handled by your painter, or we can recommend our preferred drywall sub if you'd rather have one contractor handle the close-out.
