Standby Generator Installation

Who installs standby generators in St. Louis?

Untitled design 1 1

Most St. Louis homeowners think about a generator after the second multi-day outage in a year. The ice storm in January, the derecho in July, the tree-fall outage that takes out a transformer for 36 hours. A whole-home standby generator on natural gas or propane turns those outages from a fridge-emptying event into a thirty-second flicker. We install Generac Guardian and Kohler standby generators across the St. Louis metro on permit, with the Spire gas-line coordination and the AHJ inspection handled.

What’s included on a standby generator install:

Every install is done on permit to current local AHJ code requirements and the manufacturer install spec. One-year written labor warranty on our work. The Generac or Kohler manufacturer warranty starts at 3 years standard (varies by unit). Extended warranties are often available, with seasonal offers periodically.

How a Kay-Bee generator install runs

The on-site install itself doesn’t take long, but the timeline starts weeks before that. The engineered drawings have to be prepared and submitted to the AHJ. The permit review runs its course. The Spire gas-line work has to be scheduled. The unit has to ship. Here’s how the whole sequence looks from a signed quote to a generator that test-fires on its own every other week.

6 to 8 weeks from signed quote to install in St. Louis County. The engineered drawings take about 2 weeks to prepare. The AHJ permit review runs 4 to 6 weeks. Once the permit is approved we schedule the install. Spire gas scheduling runs in parallel.

Minimum billing scoped on the written estimate before any work starts. No surprise day-of charges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes. The ATS sits between Ameren and your panel, so the panel does not need extra breaker space for the generator itself. See the panel replacement page for what that scope looks like.

Honest answer: it depends on more than one variable. Central AC, heat pump, electric range, electric water heater, EV charger, hot tub, well pump — every high-draw appliance changes the answer. A 14kW unit handles essential loads (fridge, lights, furnace blower, well pump) on a smaller home with no electric range. A 22kW unit covers a typical home with central AC and an electric range running at the same time. A 26kW unit handles larger homes with multiple high-draw appliances. The right way to size a unit is to run the load calc on your actual panel during the free in-home visit, not a chart.

Natural gas if your home is on Spire or Ameren (most of the St. Louis metro). Propane if you are rural or off the gas grid. Natural gas runs as long as the gas keeps flowing, no tank to refill. Propane gives you total independence but you have to size the tank for your worst-case outage. Most homeowners we talk to go natural gas if they can.
