Who installs standby generators in St. Louis?
Most St. Louis homeowners think about a generator after the second multi-day outage in a year. The ice storm in January, the derecho in July, the tree-fall outage that takes out a transformer for 36 hours. A whole-home standby generator on natural gas or propane turns those outages from a fridge-emptying event into a thirty-second flicker. We install Generac Guardian and Kohler standby generators across the St. Louis metro on permit, with the Spire gas-line coordination and the AHJ inspection handled.
What’s included on a standby generator install:
- Free in-home sizing visit and load calc (we tell you 14kW, 22kW, or 26kW based on your actual load)
- Site prep: residential generators come with a built-in resin pad. We level the area and lay crushed rock. Concrete pad on customer request
- Spire gas-line coordination and pressure check for natural gas units (handled by our preferred sub-contractors)
- Generator set, automatic transfer switch (ATS) wired into the panel
- Engineered drawings provided to the AHJ, permit pulled, inspections coordinated
- Commissioning, bi-weekly self-test programming (customizable per homeowner request), Mobile Link or OnCue app pairing
Every install is done on permit to current local AHJ code requirements and the manufacturer install spec. One-year written labor warranty on our work. The Generac or Kohler manufacturer warranty starts at 3 years standard (varies by unit). Extended warranties are often available, with seasonal offers periodically.

How a Kay-Bee generator install runs
The on-site install itself doesn’t take long, but the timeline starts weeks before that. The engineered drawings have to be prepared and submitted to the AHJ. The permit review runs its course. The Spire gas-line work has to be scheduled. The unit has to ship. Here’s how the whole sequence looks from a signed quote to a generator that test-fires on its own every other week.
- Sizing visit and load calc, written quote
- Unit order, permit pulled, Spire gas scheduling, site prep (resin pad leveling and crushed rock, or concrete on request)
- Install day: generator placed, gas line connected, ATS wired into the panel, generator-to-panel feed run
- Commissioning and load test (we simulate an outage and confirm the ATS switches in under 10 seconds)
- App pairing, owner walkthrough, written one-year labor warranty
6 to 8 weeks from signed quote to install in St. Louis County. The engineered drawings take about 2 weeks to prepare. The AHJ permit review runs 4 to 6 weeks. Once the permit is approved we schedule the install. Spire gas scheduling runs in parallel.
Minimum billing scoped on the written estimate before any work starts. No surprise day-of charges.

Came to the house right on time for the appointment. It did not take long to get someone to come over just a couple days for a nonemergency request. Pricing was very reasonablePosted on Google Brendan JamesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Excellent job!!Posted on Google Mary WeinmanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Beyond impressed and satisfied with Kay Bee Electric! They were kind, efficient, quick, knowledgeable, trustworthy and did a fantastic job. Corrected the issue without trying to sell us on much more costly work another company had insisted we “had to have” at the cost of thousands of dollars and Kay Bee fixed the issue to code for under $300. HIGHLY recommend!Posted on Google Rebecca CaldwellTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have used Kay Bee three different times and all have been great! We have had a variety of jobs done; total replacement of electrical panel to upgrade it, moved an electrical outlet to higher in the wall for tv, replaced four lights with wafer lighting, and updated all electrical boxes on our main floor). They take care of you in a couple of days and offer a good price. They brought all materials needed, and when I added more tasks, Scott called the main office and had the supplies delivered that day so he could complete the job. You can trust them to take care of you without killing the bank account. This last time, Scott came out and he did a super job. He has worked for the company for over 20 years, that says something about the company.

Frequently Asked Questions
Want a generator before next storm season? Get a free in-home sizing visit or call (314) 837-3308.
Honest answer: it depends on more than one variable. Central AC, heat pump, electric range, electric water heater, EV charger, hot tub, well pump — every high-draw appliance changes the answer. A 14kW unit handles essential loads (fridge, lights, furnace blower, well pump) on a smaller home with no electric range. A 22kW unit covers a typical home with central AC and an electric range running at the same time. A 26kW unit handles larger homes with multiple high-draw appliances. The right way to size a unit is to run the load calc on your actual panel during the free in-home visit, not a chart.
Natural gas if your home is on Spire or Ameren (most of the St. Louis metro). Propane if you are rural or off the gas grid. Natural gas runs as long as the gas keeps flowing, no tank to refill. Propane gives you total independence but you have to size the tank for your worst-case outage. Most homeowners we talk to go natural gas if they can.
