When your light switch stops working, flickers, or feels warm to the touch, it’s more than an inconvenience. It’s a safety issue. Our licensed electricians have been working on residential switches across St. Louis, St. Charles, and Jefferson County for decades, and the honest answer we give most homeowners is that modern light switches are not built to be repaired. They’re built to be replaced. A standard switch is a $5 to $15 part. The labor to diagnose, remove, and reinstall a worn switch is the same labor as installing a new one. So we install the new one.
Signs your switch is past its service life and needs replacement:
In older homes in Jefferson County, St. Charles, and the historic neighborhoods of St. Louis, outdated switches pose a real fire hazard. The contacts wear out, the spring tension weakens, and the arcing that happens every time the switch flips eventually overheats the terminations behind the wall plate. Replacement removes the risk entirely. Learn more about home electrical fire safety at NFPA’s Home Electrical Fire Facts and at the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI).

A standard switch replacement includes a check at the box — inspecting the panel circuit, verifying the breaker is sized correctly, and labeling it if it wasn’t already marked. Our electricians arrive with the most common residential switches stocked on the truck (single-pole, 3-way, 4-way, decora rocker, dimmer, motion-sensor, and smart-switch variants), so most replacements happen in the same visit as the diagnostic.
Good lighting in your home provides safety, comfort, and a sense of peace. Single switch, whole-house Decora swap, smart-switch upgrade, or a 3-way circuit that’s been wrong since the house was built. Same job, same result. Tight terminations, verified ground, no nuisance trips. For more on switch types, dimmer compatibility, and smart switch wiring, see our Switch Installation page.

Excellent job!!Posted on Google Mary WeinmanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Beyond impressed and satisfied with Kay Bee Electric! They were kind, efficient, quick, knowledgeable, trustworthy and did a fantastic job. Corrected the issue without trying to sell us on much more costly work another company had insisted we “had to have” at the cost of thousands of dollars and Kay Bee fixed the issue to code for under $300. HIGHLY recommend!Posted on Google Rebecca CaldwellTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have used Kay Bee three different times and all have been great! We have had a variety of jobs done; total replacement of electrical panel to upgrade it, moved an electrical outlet to higher in the wall for tv, replaced four lights with wafer lighting, and updated all electrical boxes on our main floor). They take care of you in a couple of days and offer a good price. They brought all materials needed, and when I added more tasks, Scott called the main office and had the supplies delivered that day so he could complete the job. You can trust them to take care of you without killing the bank account. This last time, Scott came out and he did a super job. He has worked for the company for over 20 years, that says something about the company.

Modern residential switches aren't built to be opened and repaired. The contacts are sealed inside the body and the spring tension is part of the molded assembly. The labor to diagnose a failing switch, remove it, take it apart (to the degree that's even possible), and reinstall it is the same labor as installing a new one. Replacing it gives you a switch that's good for another 20 years instead of one that's already past its service life. We do this same honest math on light fixtures and ceiling fans. See our Light Fixture Repair or Replacement and Ceiling Fan Repair or Replacement pages.
The switch itself is a small part — the cost is more for a dimmer, smart switch, or motion-sensor variant than for a standard switch. The actual cost is the labor, the truck roll, and the time on site. We don't quote switch repairs in advance — call to schedule, and we'll price it once we can see what's actually going on with the wiring.
Yes, but in almost every case the diagnostic ends at "this switch is past its service life, replace it." The exceptions are when the problem is downstream of the switch (a bad bulb, a failed fan motor, a broken bond at the fixture, or a tripped breaker that has nothing to do with the switch at all). Those are the cases where the diagnostic visit ends with "the switch is fine, the problem is elsewhere," and we'll show you exactly what we found. Either way, you get an honest answer in writing before any replacement work starts.
