Why We Recommend Replacement Instead of Repair

Why ceiling fan repair often doesn't make sense

fan installtion

If you searched “ceiling fan repair near me” and landed here, here’s the honest answer. We don’t do fan repairs anymore at Kay-Bee. We do replacements. Not because repair is impossible, but because for most fans we see, the math works out the same and replacement ends up better. Quieter motor, fresh manufacturer warranty, and a real fan rated brace box that the old fan probably never had.

When repair can still make sense (and when it doesn’t):

A new ceiling fan starts around $80 at Lowes and goes up from there. The install labor is the same whether the fan is new or fifteen years old. By the time you pay for a motor diagnosis, a capacitor, and the labor to install the part, you’re past the cost of a fresh fan with a 5-year manufacturer warranty. For ENERGY STAR fan guidance, see EnergyStar.gov.

How a Kay-Bee fan replacement works

A replacement is the same install we’d do on a brand-new fan, with one extra step at the start. We take the old fan down, check the existing wiring and the ceiling box, and remove the old hardware. Then we put the new fan up on a fan rated brace box, balance the blades, and dial in the wall switch or remote.

Here’s what’s different from a brand-new install:

If you bring the new fan, we install it. If you want a recommendation, we will source one for you. Your choice on budget and look. The install labor is the same either way.

One fan, one visit. Vaulted ceilings between 12 and 20 feet require a second electrician on the ladder for safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have a ceiling fan that’s wobbling, humming, or just done? See our ceiling fan installation page or call (314) 837-3308 to schedule a replacement.

Most fan repairs aren't worth it for the homeowner. A capacitor plus the diagnostic and labor runs about the same as a new builder-grade fan. A new fan starts around $80 at Lowes and the install labor is the same either way. We'd rather put a new fan up that has a fresh manufacturer warranty than swap a small part into a twelve-year-old motor that may fail again in six months. For high-end fans under five years old (Hunter, Casablanca, Minka Aire, Hubbardton Forge), call us before you buy. Those are usually worth saving.

The fan you buy — the install labor is a flat approach regardless of fan type. Vaulted ceilings between 12 and 20 feet require a second electrician on the ladder for safety.

Skip the diagnostic. If the fan is more than 8 years old, vibrates, hums, runs hot, or runs slow on every speed, just replace it. If it's a high-end fan under five years old, call us before you buy a new one. Those are usually worth checking. For everything else, pick a new fan and we'll handle the swap.
